Imtiyaz is dedicated to preserving the handwoven tradition of Kashmir shawls. Even though economic conditions are tough in Kashmir, Imtiyaz is determined to remain in his hometown and continue his art. He learned to weave from his grandmother and father. His brother works alongside him and he hopes to pass this art to his children as they grow up.
Imtiyaz has a medical condition that leaves him very susceptible to pollution. He is unable to travel to Delhi because of the pollution and this has hampered his ability to grow his workshop. However, he refuses to be stifled by this and remains determined to succeed.
Imtiyaz is entirely dependent on his Novica sales as his health prevents him from traveling to markets outside of his Kashmir home. In addition to himself, his wife and their four children, Imtiyaz's workshop also supports his brother.
Imtiyaz believes strongly in education and is saving to ensure that his three daughters and his son receive the best possible education.
Imtiyaz has received 4 microcredit loans with 0% interest from Kiva and Novica, the first for $1200 and the most recent for $800.
Imtiyaz supports four children.

"My father has been in the field of Kashmiri shawls since he graduated. But I think my association with this art goes back to very long ago when I was a child. My grandmother use to weave shawls…."
