"I enjoy my art. Each step is an adventure; every day I discover new things that lead me to have better results and better products to offer my clients.
“My name is Elena Ixtamer. I love being able to introduce myself as part of the NOVICA family. I was born in 1975 in San Juan la Laguna, a municipality located in the beautiful department of Sololá. I grew up admiring the beauty that my country offered me, and what better place to do that than on the shores of Lake Atitlán. My mother was an artisan--she wove on a backstrap loom--and my father was a day laborer.
“From the age of 8 my mother taught me how to weave with a lot of patience and love. This art is learned by most women at a very young age. Due to its complexity, and because it is part of our traditions and customs, it is also part of a family legacy. Just as I learned from my mom, and my mom from my grandmother, now I teach my daughters; because it is an art that represents us as Guatemalans. It has given my family much joy, since it has been the main source of income not just for me, but for many families.
“I have been working on this for more than 15 years and I really love it. I have learned many more techniques that have allowed me to experiment and grow.
I dream of knowing that my products are highlighting feminine beauty in other countries; and that they know that they are made with a lot of love and dedication, because the work is done while always thinking of customers who are looking for a handmade, quality product.”
