Ernestina Oppong Asante African drums and wood carvings
"Though carving has long been regarded as the preserve of men, I am glad that I have been able not only to infiltrate but to also make an impact on the trade."
"Prior to working with you, I was selling along the roadside, but now I am in my own shop. One thing I love about you is that you advise artisans so we can grow. One of the changes I've observed is that the quality of my work has improved with your advice. I have also... read more

African Wood Djembe Drum, "Sword of Justice"$147.99
Colors burst with every inviting beat of this extraordinary djembe drum. First used in Benin for voodoo rituals, djembe drums now enliven celebrations around the world. Ernestina Oppong Asante combines a passion for carving with music, resulting in a traditional instrument with contemporary flair. The base is carved from tweneboa, a local hardwood of golden grain that highlights the engaging designs. Oppong applies shoe and mansion polish to enhance the wood's smooth, radiant appearance. Iron rod rings are attached to the mouth of the drum and wrapped with cotton to prevent rusting. Through these rings nylon ropes are double-woven, securely fastening the goatskin drumhead. Bright kente cloths adorn the upper part, while the base features brass inlay and majestic beaded swords.
Kpanlogo drum, "Black and White Beat"$124.99
Daniel Asante preserves Ewe musical traditions with a monochrome drum. It is carved by hand from tweneboa wood painted black and white. The drumhead is made from bull hide and held taught with cotton threads. The kpanlogo is a traditional drum from the Ewe people around the Volta and western regions of Ghana.
Artisan Crafted West African Decorative Djembe Black Drum, "Black Invitation to Peace"$79.99
The Bambara people of Mali say the drum gets its name from the saying, which translates as "everyone gather together in peace" - thus defining the djembe's purpose. Christopher Nyasafo celebrates this legendary style of African drum with this decorative mini-djembe, in bluish black and white. He hand-carves the goblet-like shape of the drum from tweneboah wood, and gives a weathered appearance to the leather drumhead, which is affixed with iron rings wrapped in cotton.
Handcrafted Tweneboa Wood Bongo Drum from Ghana, "Dramatic"$94.99
Enjoy the feel of a West African beat as you play this bold-looking bongo drum. Presented by Ghanaian artisan Mary Charity Owusu, the bongo is hand-carved out of tweneboa wood and covered with a goatskin head. Red and black cotton cord and a dramatic block pattern decorate the professionally tuned drum, which features a convenient carrying strap.
